Healthy gums: signs to watch and habits that help
Bleeding gums are common, but they are not normal. Learn the early signs of gum disease and how to reverse them.

Gum disease often develops quietly. In its early stage, called gingivitis, it can be reversed. Left untreated, it can lead to loose teeth.
Early signs
- Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
- Red, swollen or tender gums
- Persistent bad breath
- Tartar building up near the gumline
Later warning signs
- Gums pulling away from the teeth
- Teeth that feel loose or look longer
- Changes in your bite
- Pus between the teeth and gums
What causes it?
Plaque that is not removed hardens into tartar, which irritates the gums. Smoking, diabetes, stress and hormonal changes can make gums more vulnerable.
How it is treated
Professional scaling removes tartar above and below the gumline. With good home care afterwards, early gum disease usually settles. More advanced cases need deeper cleaning and closer follow up.
Habits that help
Brush twice a day with a soft brush, clean between your teeth daily, avoid tobacco and book a cleaning every six months. If your gums bleed for more than a week or two despite good cleaning, it is time for a checkup.
