A simple daily routine for healthy teeth
Five small habits that protect your teeth and gums, and the common mistakes to avoid.

Most dental problems start with plaque, the soft film of bacteria that builds up every day. A few consistent habits keep it under control.
Brush twice a day, gently
Use a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste for about two minutes, morning and night. Angle the bristles towards the gumline and use small circular movements. Brushing harder does not clean better and can wear your gums.
Clean between your teeth
A toothbrush cannot reach between teeth. Use floss or interdental brushes once a day. If your gums bleed at first, keep going gently; bleeding usually improves as the gums get healthier. If it does not, see your dentist.
Watch the frequency of sugar
How often you eat sugar matters more than how much. Keep sweets and sugary drinks to mealtimes rather than snacking through the day.
Do not rinse straight after brushing
Spit out the toothpaste but avoid rinsing with lots of water, so the fluoride stays on your teeth longer.
See your dentist regularly
Checkups and professional cleaning every six months catch small problems early, when they are easier and cheaper to fix.
Common mistakes
- Using a hard brush or scrubbing sideways
- Skipping night brushing
- Ignoring bleeding gums
- Waiting for pain before visiting a dentist
