Teeth whitening: what to expect
Professional whitening is simple and safe when it is supervised. Here is what happens and how to keep your new shade.

Tea, coffee, tobacco and time all leave their mark on teeth. Professional whitening lifts these stains so your smile looks brighter and more even.
Before whitening
Your dentist first checks for cavities, worn areas and gum problems, because whitening gel should not reach untreated decay. A professional cleaning removes surface stains so the gel can work evenly.
During the treatment
Your gums are protected with a barrier, then a whitening gel is applied in several short cycles. You can relax while it works, and the shade is compared before and after.
After whitening
- Avoid strongly colored food and drinks for 48 hours
- Expect mild sensitivity for a day or two in some cases
- Keep brushing twice a day and book regular cleanings
Things whitening cannot do
Whitening changes natural teeth only. Crowns, veneers and fillings keep their original color, so if they are visible your dentist will plan how to match them. Very deep or internal discoloration may need veneers instead.
Is store bought whitening a good idea?
Strips and powders can irritate gums and give patchy results, and some products are abrasive. A supervised treatment is safer and far more predictable.
