Dental implants: a complete patient guide
How implants work, what the procedure involves and how to look after them so they last.

A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth with a small titanium post. Once it bonds with the jawbone, a crown is fixed on top. The result looks and feels like a natural tooth.
Why replace a missing tooth at all?
When a tooth is lost, the neighboring teeth can drift into the gap, the opposite tooth can over erupt and the bone in that area slowly shrinks. Replacing the tooth protects your bite and your face.
Is an implant right for me?
Most healthy adults can have implants. Your dentist checks the amount of bone, your gum health and any medical conditions. Smoking and uncontrolled diabetes can affect healing, so they are discussed openly at the consultation.
The procedure step by step
- Assessment: examination and imaging to plan the implant position
- Placement: the implant is placed under local anesthesia
- Healing: the bone bonds with the implant over the following weeks
- Crown: a custom crown is fixed to the implant
- Review: your bite and gums are checked and maintenance is planned
How does it feel afterwards?
Most people describe mild soreness for a few days that is controlled with simple painkillers. Soft food and careful cleaning help the area heal.
Caring for your implant
Brush and clean between your teeth every day, just as you would with natural teeth, and attend regular checkups. Healthy gums around the implant are the key to keeping it for many years.
